Mystery Mondays: Claudia Bishop's Dr. McKenzie Mystery Series

The Casebooks of Dr. McKenzie mystery series by Claudia Bishop follows the exploits of Dr. Austin McKenzie, a retired veterinarian forced to return to work due to some ill-advised investments.  A former department chair of Bovine Science at Cornell University, he now runs a private large animal practice from his farm in Trumansburg, New York, with the help of his voluptuous younger wife, Madeline, and two veterinary students from the university.  Dr. McKenzie is a bit of a curmudgeon, but his sense of justice is absolute, and he is totally smitten with his wife, who can wrap him around her little finger when necessary.  In his first case, the murder of vets involved in monitoring horses at the Earlsdown Three-Day Event and an attempt on the doctor himself force him to seek the solution to the crimes himself (by the way, you must read this book if only to find out the significance of the roasted onion!).  Murders at a turkey farm and a goat farm lead to his next two cases.  So far there are three novels in this series, and I hope to see a new one out soon.  Austin and Madeline McKenzie are an endearing couple, and animal lovers such as myself will enjoy the nonhuman species that abound in these books as well.
