This 'n That Thursdays: Recently Released Movies I Would Like to See

From Quora

Lately I have noticed ads for some intriguing new movie releases, and now that our freakish heat wave seems to have passed I am in the mood to sit indoors and watch a good film.  Below are a few that I consider to be good candidates:

From Agatha Christie Ltd.

1) "Murder on the Orient Express" (2017) - I am not sure this classic mystery by Agatha Christie needed a remake, but I have always been a fan of her works so I would love to see this movie.  There are already at least three film versions.  The first was released in 1974 and starred Albert Finney as Hercule Poirot (it also starred Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Lauren Bacall, and a number of other well-known actors).  The second was a 2001 TV movie with Alfred Molina in the role of the detective.  A third version was part of the PBS series "Agatha Christie's Poirot" starring David Suchet which came out in 2010.  In the new release Kenneth Branagh portrays Poirot, while Judi Dench, Michelle Pfieffer, Johnny Depp and several other familiar actors are part of the cast as well.  The movie comes out tomorrow, November 10th, and I hope to be one of the first in line to see it (you can watch the trailer at the bottom of this post)!

2) "LBJ" (2016) - I am old enough to just barely remember the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the inauguration of Lyndon B. Johnson.  I was so young that about the only thing I recall about LBJ was the controversy that arose when he was photographed picking up one of his pet beagles by the ears (apparently something that he had always done for some reason - the dog was not hurt, but I don't think he ever did that again!).  It would be nice to learn a bit more about this president who has always been overshadowed by the charismatic President Kennedy, and I have to admit I am curious to get a look at Woody Harrelson's portrayal of our 36th president.  This is a film that my husband the political news junkie would like to watch as well, so I think there is a movie date night in our near future.  Apparently there is also a 2016 HBO movie starring Bryan Cranston as LBJ that is very well done, so we might have to find that one and see it as well for comparison!

3) "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) - what can I say?  Sometimes I am such a sucker for comic book superhero movies, and this one has been getting pretty good reviews.  Even so, I may be able to wait until this film shows up on television, which is where I saw the previous Thor movies.  I still want to see "Wonder Woman" (2017) - I was in New York taking care of my sister when it came out and she was not interested, so I just might have to get the DVD.  The movie "Justice League" (2017) will premiere in about a week, and I think I will have to see that one as well.  I recently watched "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014) on TV and was surprised that I actually enjoyed it (the trailers I saw when the movie first came out made it seem rather silly to me).  I am going to have to look for the 2017 sequel, which friends have told me is also really good.

Speaking of superheroes, one movie that I highly recommend is "Hidden Figures" (2016), which I also recently viewed on television.  I had been wanting to see this one and don't know why it took me so long, but I enjoyed it so much I will be buying the DVD.  And after overdosing on scary movies for Halloween, I am so ready for a good comedy, which seems to be really hard to find.  I'm hoping there is an excellent new comedy film coming out for the holidays soon - we shall see!

Wish List Wednesdays: New Arrivals at Anthropologie

I like to check out the new arrivals at Anthropologie on a regular basis because they always seem to find an array of fun and unique apparel and home décor.  This week I found some really tantalizing animal-themed items for the home.  Listed below are just a few that caught my eye:

1) Winter Fauna Dinnerware - this colorful earthenware includes dessert plates ($14 each) and mugs ($16 each) in five different animal designs, plus a moose pitcher ($58), stag platter ($48, image at top of page), and fawn serving bowl ($48).  Think of the fun holiday table you could set using these lovely pieces!

2) Row of Sheep Planter ($54) - this sheepish planter made me smile!  Made of dark grey resin, it would be the perfect container for a row of little live plants such as herbs or succulents, or could even be used as a container for a flower arrangement to decorate the holiday table.

3) A World Full of Animal Stories ($19.99) - if you have young children in your life, this delightful book would be a wonderful holiday gift.  Fifty stories from around the world featuring animals of all sorts fill this beautifully illustrated hardcover tome, ready for any child's bedtime reading!

These selections are among the new arrivals for the home, both animal-themed and otherwise, at Anthropologie.  Take a look at the rest and you may just find a few irresistible items yourself!

Weekend Wardrobe: Casual Weekend Getaway Travel Wardrobe

From DeviantArt

I love the idea of taking off on a fall long weekend getaway to a relaxing destination, with no particular agenda in mind except some stress-free relaxation time.  I would seek out a quiet rural setting where I could take long walks and spend some time reading a good book with no interruptions from phones, televisions, or even computers.  The wardrobe I would pack would include soothing colors that would be comfortable if I decided to spend my time in solitude but look good if I chose to go out in public.  Let's start with an example of the apparel I would wear on the way to my destination (all items in this collection are from the Backcountry website):

Clockwise from top left: Toad&Co Women's Marley Long-Sleeve T-Shirt in Black; Lucy Destination Everywhere Scarf in Rich Olive Palm Print; Will Leather Goods Cirrus Saddlebag in Black; Free People Women's Ribby Rib Cardi in Moss; Teva Willow Chelsea Shoes in Black; Free People Women's Easy Goes It Leggings in Moss.

Here are the items that I would pack in that lovely and unique pine cone print duffel bag:

Clockwise from top left: Filson Women's Light Geelong T-Neck Sweater in Charcoal; Free People Women's Take Over Me V-Neck Sweater in Black; White + Warren Women's Flounce Open Crewneck Shirt in White; Prana Women's Briann Pants in Black; Kavu Women's Hadley Shirt in Pine Cones; Ibex Shae Dress in Black; Seychelles Footwear Snare Boots in Black Leather; Kavu Women's Long-Sleeve Ingrid Shirt in Stormy; Prana Women's Sage Jogger Pants in Black; Center: Kavu Barrel Roll Duffel Bag in Pine Cones.

Jewelry - I almost forgot jewelry!  Since the duffel bag and one shirt have a pine cone design and the scarf has a palm print that looks almost like a fern leaf, I think this necklace and earrings set would be perfect:

Spruce Mountain Designs Sterling Silver Pine Cone & Fern Necklace and Earrings

And should the weather happen to be especially chilly for fall, a jacket like this one would keep just about anyone toasty warm:

Mountain Hardwear Women's Micro Ratio Hooded Down Jacket in Stone Green

I hope you all have a lovely autumn weekend, whether you get away from home or not!

Foodie Fridays: Creamy Butternut Squash Pasta with Gingered Brussels Sprouts

This pasta dish was inspired by a recipe I found for Creamy Butternut Squash Pasta with Shredded Brussels Sprouts, Bacon and Raisins.  I liked the idea of the butternut squash sauce, and I decided to use chickpea penne instead of the wheat pasta in the original recipe.  I was not so thrilled with the Brussels sprouts recipe, as I cannot eat bacon and was not keen on adding raisins.  However, I subsequently discovered a recipe for Shredded Ginger Brussels Sprouts and felt that it would be a great substitution, so the following recipe is the result.

I changed up the pasta sauce recipe a bit to complement the flavors of the Brussels sprouts.  Since I had leftover rotisserie chicken, I added some to the pasta, but leave it out if you like.  You could easily shred your own Brussels sprouts, but I am too lazy to do so, especially when I can buy pre-shredded ones so conveniently at our local Publix.  Even the butternut squash was already diced by those thoughtful supermarket employees.  Actually, I use pre-minced garlic and ginger for the same reason.  I love the idea that I can be a thoroughly lazy cook and still come up with healthy and satisfying recipes that taste good!

Creamy Butternut Squash Pasta with Gingered Brussels Sprouts

Butternut Squash Pasta:
2 T. olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp. minced ginger
12 oz. peeled butternut squash, diced
1 C. chicken broth (plus extra as needed)
2 T. butter
1/4 C. heavy cream
1/3 C. sliced scallions
2 C. diced cooked chicken (optional)
salt and pepper to taste
8 oz. chickpea penne (I used Banza Penne Made from Chickpeas)

Gingered Brussels Sprouts:
1 T. olive oil
12 oz. shaved or shredded Brussels sprouts (I used Eat Smart Shaved Brussels Sprouts)
1 clove garlic, minced
1 T. minced garlic
1/4 tsp. salt
2 T. water
1/4 tsp. sugar (I used coconut sugar)
1/3 C. sliced scallions

For the pasta sauce, heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat.  Sauté the garlic in the pot for one minute.  Add the ginger and squash and toss to combine.  Add the chicken broth and bring to a simmer.  Cover the pot, reduce the heat to low, and simmer until the squash is tender, about 15 minutes (add more chicken broth as needed if the pot begins to look too dry).

Uncover the pot and remove from the heat.  Blend the squash with an immersion blender until smooth (or if you don't mind a chunkier sauce use a potato masher like I did).  Return the pan to low heat and add the butter, stirring until the butter melts completely.  Add the cream and stir until well combined.  Stir in the scallions, plus the chicken if using, and heat through, adding more chicken broth if the sauce is too thick.  Season to taste with salt and pepper and set aside.

Cook the pasta according to package directions.  Rinse and drain.  Add to the pot with the butternut squash sauce and stir to combine.  Set aside.

In a large skillet, sauté the Brussels sprouts in 1 T. olive oil over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes.  Add the ginger and garlic and cook one more minute.  Stir in the salt, water, and sugar.  Cover the skillet and cook over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, or until the Brussels sprouts are tender.  Stir in the scallions and heat through.  To serve, top individual servings of pasta with spoonfuls of the cooked Brussels sprouts.  Serves 4.

Note: You can make the Brussels sprouts ahead of time and refrigerate them until needed.  Heat them in the microwave when ready to serve.

This 'n That Thursdays: A Few of My Favorite Things

From The Telegraph

Halloween is over, November has arrived, and the winter holiday season will soon be upon us!  For some reason this makes me think nostalgically of a certain song from "The Sound of Music" (1965), so today I thought I would list "a few of my favorite things", in keeping with the tune.  In no particular order, here are some of the things currently on my favorites list:

1) Abroy "Who Lives Here" free online games - I love logic puzzles, and these games from Abroy are a fun way to exercise my logic skills, such as they are.  From the list of clues given, you must decide who lives in which house and what other objects (cars, pets, favorite foods, etc.) belong to each of about six different people.  These games come out once a week on Fridays, and I so look forward to each new game that Friday is now my favorite day of the week!

From Half Baked Harvest

2) Half Baked Harvest Cookbook - one of my favorite cooking blogs is called Half Baked Harvest, and this blogger recently published a cookbook full of her recipes.  Her photography is lovely, the recipes are tantalizing, and best of all, because she lives in Colorado, many of the recipes are perfect for fall and winter.  I have not yet had time to make one of the recipes in the book, but I have tried some of the recipes on her website, and I can't wait to try making a few more in the near future.

3) YouTube pronunciation videos - every once in a while I will come across a word in print that I cannot figure out how to pronounce (despite the pronunciation section of the dictionary).  For those words I really need to hear someone say them correctly for me, and luckily YouTube is a great source for people willing to do exactly that.  There are several sites that upload pronunciation videos on YouTube.  My favorite is "Emma Saying" because it is short and simple - the word is spelled on the screen, and Emma pronounces the word two times, including alternate pronunciations if applicable.  I finally now know that there is more than one way to pronounce both "tinnitus" and "kalanchoe" (see above)!

From Instacart

4) Smoky Park Smoked Mozzarella - I found this cheese at our local Publix earlier in the year, and I am now addicted!  I love smoked cheeses, and my previous favorite was a smoked Gruyere, but once I tasted this mozzarella all others have fallen by the wayside.  I could eat this cheese exclusively every day and never get tired of it!

From Aramark

5) Aramark WearGuard WearTuff Thermal Lined Sweatshirt Jacket - now that colder weather has finally meandered its way into Georgia, I have to wear a warm jacket in the mornings when I walk the dogs and clean the horse barn.  My jacket has to be tough as well as washable since it takes a lot of abuse, and I find the men's Wearguard WearTuff Thermal-Lined Sweatshirt to be the best for my purposes.  I have been wearing these thermal-lined jackets for decades and they last quite a while (I am now on my fourth one, which is pretty good considering I got my first one when I was a teen).  Color choices used to be limited to navy or grey, but now there are several options, and my latest jacket, just bought recently, is a color called brown duck.  The sizing has changed so that I now have to order a medium instead of a large, but I like the new generous proportions as I get more coverage, which means I stay even warmer!

I hope you get to enjoy a few of your favorite things this month!

Wish List Wednesdays: Coldwater Creek Darling Dalmatian Sweater

Is it too early to start my Christmas wish list?  I hope not, because the Darling Dalmatian Sweater ($79.95-$89.95) from Coldwater Creek needs to be at the top of that list!  As an avid Dalmatian lover, I am of course crazy about the design, and the Dover Red color is perfect for the Yuletide season.  The mid-weight cotton /acrylic material should be comfortable in our mild winters, and the sweater is designed for layering so if we do get one of our rare cold spells I can simply add another layer.  I'm not even sure I can wait until Christmas - I may just have to order this sweater now!
