Wish List Wednesdays: It's a Jungle Out There at Serengeti!

I am always on the lookout for interesting apparel and accessories, and one of my favorite sites to search is the Serengeti website.  Here are just a few items I found recently, all with a wild animal theme that would boost the nature quotient of any wardrobe:

1) Giraffes Pullover (on sale for $24.99) - I never had a particular interest in giraffes before, but this bright blue pullover sweatshirt with the trio of silk-screened giraffes running rampant along one side has turned me into a fan!

2) Owl-Print Tote ($39.95) - owls have been an enduringly popular theme for a while now, and one look at this delightful tote makes it clear why they are here to stay.

3) Enameled Ladybug Earrings ($19.95) - I think these colorful mosaic ladybug earrings are adorable, and if I had pierced ears I would certainly have to own a pair!

4) Fox & Paws Socks 3-Pack ($14.95) - if you are fond of foxes, this set of three fox-inspired pairs of socks would be a great addition to your accessories collection (there is even a matching sweatshirt, shown at the top of the page).

Weekend Wardrobe: Casual and Comfortable Winter 4x4 Wardrobe Accessories

Last week's fun and colorful wardrobe needs some accessories, so today's the day!  First I want to start with a set that includes some leggings, since the very short print skirt in this winter collection definitely needs some added warmth:

Clockwise from top left: Turtle Fur Talavera Nights Knit Beanie in Cherry; Uniqlo Cashmere Knit Gloves in Purple; Uniqlo Women Heattech Leggings in Navy; Fair Indigo Fair Trade Organic Ankle Length Leggings in Boysenberry;

More warmth is added with the coats and vests in this next set:

Clockwise from top left: Fair Indigo Fair Trade Organic Fleece Hoodie in Boysenberry;  L.L. Bean Women's Fleece Peacoat in Deepest Blue; Coldwater Creek Hooded Quilted Car Coat in Garnet; Patagonia Women's Better Sweater Fleece Vest in Classic Navy; Center: Coldwater Creek Vest for All Seasons in Honey.

Navy is the neutral in this wardrobe, so the majority of the footwear is in this color, but I could not resist adding the yellow and berry-colored pairs as well:

Clockwise from top left: Puma Suede Classic Woven Sneakers; Hamptyn Booties in Navy; Vans Off the Wall Women's Surf Rata Lo Boysenberry Pink Shoes; Eastland Crystal Women's Loafers in Navy; Center: UGG Women's Amie Boots in Navy.

Lots of color and pattern are included in the scarves and even one if the handbags in this set:

Clockwise from top left: J. W. Hulme Co. Excursion Handbag in Navy Leather; Serrv Everyday Striped Scarf; LJL Design Oblong Chiffon Scarf in Gold; Serrv Plum Perfect Carryall; Fair Indigo Matt and Nat Maya Vegan Leather Wristlet in Moonstone; L.L. Bean Casual Printed Scarf in Mulberry Vine.

I decided to focus on earrings in all of the colors when selecting jewelry (gold stands in for the honey-colored yellow), but added a necklace and a bracelet as well because I don't actually wear earrings!

Clockwise from top left: Kate Spade New York Square Stud Earrings in Navy; Novica 'Petals' Handcrafted Gold Vermail and Garnet Bracelet; Coldwater Creek Endless Circles Earrings in Gold; Macy's January's Birthstone Garnet Stud Earrings; Center: Coldwater Creek Endless Circles Necklace in Gold.

I really like the way this 4x4 wardrobe came together.  As I mentioned last week, I don't wear navy, but if I did it would be in a collection similar to this one!  Next week I will start thinking about spring again, perhaps with a destination in mind!

Foodie Fridays: World's Easiest Broccoli Cheese Soup

My recipe for this very easy broccoli cheese soup was inspired by one I found for Broccoli Cheddar Soup on the Mystery Lovers' Kitchen website, another one of my favorite food blogs.  I liked the idea of adding a can of white beans to increase the nutritional value as well as thicken the soup.  I left out the jalapeño as I prefer less spicy heat in my soups.  I also decided to use a jar of leftover cheese dip instead of shredding cheese, partly because I am lazy but also because I wanted to use up the dip.  If you are lazy like me but prefer a spicier soup, use a spicier cheese dip!  This soup is a great comfort food on a cold day, and so simple that it takes almost no time to make.  Feel free to use real cheese instead of the dip, but then of course it will not be the world's easiest soup!

World's Easiest Broccoli Cheese Soup

1-2 T. olive oil
1/2 medium onion, diced
3 C. chicken stock (I used unsalted)
1 bag (12 oz.) microwaveable broccoli florets, cooked
1 can (15 oz.) white beans, rinsed and drained
2 tsp. mustard
1/2 tsp. salt
1 C. cheese dip (I used Tostito's Smooth and Cheesy Dip)

Heat the oil in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat.  Add the onion and cook until soft but not brown, about 8 minutes.  Add the stock, broccoli, and beans.  Increase the heat to high and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove the soup from the heat and cool slightly.  Using an immersion blender, puree the soup until smooth.  Return to low heat and add the mustard, salt, and cheese dip.  Heat, stirring, until the cheese dip is completely incorporated.  Serve immediately topped with shredded cheese if you like.  Serves 4-6.

This 'n That Thursdays: How to Hygge: The Nordic Secrets to a Happy Life by Signe Johansen

From POPSUGAR

Lately I have been seeing comments here and there about a concept called "hygge" which, according to Norwegian chef and author Signe Johansen, is a Danish/Norwegian word that translates as a feeling of cosiness, kinship, and conviviality.  There are several books out on the subject, and I decided that I would purchase one to learn more about hygge.  The one I settled on is called How to Hygge: The Nordic Secrets to a Happy Life (2017) by Johansen, mostly because I liked her concept of balancing cosy interior activities with a good dose of outdoor living.  She claims that hygge is grounded in the Scandinavian philosophy of embracing their sometimes challenging climate and finding ways to bring comfort and enjoyment to life no matter what nature has to offer.  In fact, it is the challenges that make one appreciate the comforts even more.

The book is about 200 pages long, and the type is rather small, but the eight chapters are arranged in an easily followed manner, starting with the influence of nature, then a description of the Nordic trait of self-sufficiency fostered by their connection to the outdoors, progressing to the concept of "fika" or convivial gatherings, and then moving on to some specifics on how to hygge.  Photographs scattered throughout provide a visual sense of the subject as well.

Since Johansen is a chef, she includes a number of recipes, but this book is more than just a cookbook.  It describes a philosophy of life uniquely Scandinavian that is catching the attention of people all over the world.  Even if you are perfectly satisfied with life as you know it, reading this book will give you a glimpse of a lifestyle in what many feel is one of the happiest places on earth to live.  The author even includes a one-page summary on how to hygge at the end of the book, and I can almost guarantee that her 16 points will draw you in for even more information!

Wish List Wednesdays: Lavender Hearts Soap Set from Coldwater Creek

I love lavender and often use lavender-scented soap, so of course I think that the Lavender Hearts Soap Set ($29.95 for a set of four) from Coldwater Creek would be an ideal Valentine's Day gift!  These heart-shaped soaps are made by artisan craftsmen in Provence, are enriched with shea butter, and are milled four times for a richer lather.  Some day I hope to visit the blooming lavender fields of Provence, but until then I would be happy to inhale that lovely fragrance from these finely crafted soaps.

On the Homefront: 2017 Year of the Rooster Table

Dalmatian Dixie Chick celebrated the Chinese New Year with her
favorite rooster pal!

The Chinese New Year started on January 28th this year.  Yesterday was the beginning of the Year of the Red Fire Rooster, so my table for the holiday had to feature this flamboyant fowl!  For a slightly different approach, I decided that my theme would be "Eastern New Year Meets Western Country", since chickens are so popular in country-style décor, especially where I live in Georgia!  Red is also a pretty popular color choice for both styles, so there is an inordinate amount of red on my table (apparently it would be unlucky to wear red, however, and you should instead choose complementary colors like brown and yellow for apparel).  Fire, which of course is important to everyone at this time of year in particular, is represented by a scattering of candles in the tablescape.  Now if only such harmonious co-mingling could occur in the real world as well as it does on my dining room table!

Bodrum red fabric Tuscany Rooster Placemat (bought years ago); BHG Amity Dinner Plate in Ivory (from Walmart last year); Certified International Vintage Rooster Canapé Plate (from Amazon); red napkin; Cuisinart French Rooster Flatware (from Amazon); clear water glass (bought so long ago I have no idea where they are from or who made them); Home Essentials Tuscana Red Stemless Wine Glass (from Marshall's last year).

The other three appetizer plate designs:

A closer look at the rooster flatware handles (and rooster place mat).

Tea is waiting to be served at the head of the table (your choice of
black or green).

I do not own any rooster décor, but I do have a bright red ceramic hen,
so here she is as the centerpiece (after all, we know who is really in charge
for any species, right?).  Instead of eggs, she is surrounded by orange
tangerines, which symbolize good luck and wealth.

My version of a traditional tray of togetherness to offer to guests.

My tray of togetherness includes coconut chips (togetherness), peanuts (longevity), dates (sweetness in the New Year), candied ginger (good health), pumpkin seeds (fertility), candied pineapple (prosperity), macadamia nuts, and Brazil nuts (the latter two simply because I had them and did not have time to find more traditional offerings!).  The tray is surrounded by ingot-shaped, gold-wrapped chocolates to represent wealth and prosperity.

Naturally my menu had to feature poultry-based foods!  Chinese takeout from our nearby local restaurant consisting of chicken and egg dishes comprise the meal, and I even attempted to make Chinese egg tarts (dan tat), a popular dessert selection in dim sum restaurants.  My custard filling did not set the way it should have, possibly because I used cashew milk instead of regular milk, but the low-carb almond crust was perfect and the end result was still tasty (I have included the recipe if you would like to try your luck at making them).

2017 Year of the Rooster Menu:

Egg Rolls
Egg Drop Soup
Chicken with Broccoli
Chicken Lo Mein
Chinese Egg Tarts*
Hot Tea

*Chinese Egg Tarts

Crust:
1 C. almond flour
1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 T. sugar
1 T. cold butter
1 egg, beaten (reserve half)

Filling:
1/4 C. sugar
1/2 C. water
1/4 C. milk
1 egg, beaten
1/4 tsp. vanilla

Thoroughly blend together the first three crust ingredients in a large bowl.  Add the butter and half of the beaten egg.  Cut into the dry ingredients until the butter is incorporated and the dough holds together (these steps can be done in a food processor).  Press the dough into the bottoms and up the sides of four muffin pan cups (you can use a tart tamper, but I could not find mine and used the bottom of a spice jar instead).  Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.  Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.  Loosen the tart shells in the cups but leave in place.

Combine the sugar and water for the filling in a small saucepan and bring to a boil.  Cook, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved, then cool to room temperature.  Combine the remaining egg from the crust ingredients with the egg for the filling.  Strain through a fine sieve into the cooled sugar water.  Stir in the milk and vanilla.  Strain again and fill the tart shells almost to the top (I had a lot of extra filling).

Bake the tarts at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes (watch for puffing of the filling as this may mean that the oven is too hot).  Open the oven door slightly and bake 5 minutes longer, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the custard comes out clean.  Remove from the oven, cool to room temperature, and serve.  Serves 4.

Notes: In the original recipe, the crust recipe is supposed to make six tarts, but I found that the shells were too shallow, and should probably have only made four.  Also, the crust tends to puff up when baking with the filling inside, so it may be a good idea to prick them with a fork before filling (although this may cause the filling to leak through the bottom a bit).  Straining the filling mixture through a sieve helps to prevent bubbles and puffing of the filling while baking.  I did halve the original recipe, so it is easily doubled (use one egg for the crust and three for the filling).

Weekend Wardrobe: Casual and Comfortable Winter 4x4 Wardrobe

I decided to put together another winter wardrobe this week, as we are experiencing a cooler spell of weather here at the moment.  This 4x4 wardrobe was inspired by the casual striped cardigan shown above from the Serrv website, which would pair perfectly with dark blue jeans.  I also wanted to include several tops in cheerful complementary colors from the Fair Indigo website.  While navy is not really my color, even I would happily wear this collection of clothing.

Let's start with the first set of four in navy blue:

Clockwise from top left: L.L. Bean Women's Heathered Cotton/Modal Print Henley in Classic Navy Heather; Fair Indigo Fair Trade Cotton/Alpaca Sweater Jacket in Midnight Navy; Fair Indigo Fair Trade Cotton/Alpaca Relaxed Turtleneck Sweater in Midnight Navy; Patagonia Women's Regular Fit Straight Jeans in Dark Denim.

A bright berry color is featured in the second set of four:

Clockwise from top left: Fair Indigo Organic Fair Trade Long Sleeve Scoop Neck Tee in Boysenberry; Fair Indigo Fair Trade Cotton/Alpaca Relaxed Turtleneck Sweater in Soft Berry; Fair Indigo Fair Trade Organic Full Skirt in Boysenberry; Coldwater Creek The Creek Straight-Leg Jeans in Wine.

Next up is a set of four comprised of muted golden yellow apparel:

Clockwise from top left: Fair Indigo Fair Trade Cotton/Alpaca Relaxed Turtleneck Sweater in Gold; Banana Republic Forever Crew-Neck Cardigan in Gold Orchid; Fair Indigo Fair Trade Organic Mock Neck in Honey; Coldwater Creek The Creek Straight-Leg Jeans in Honey.

The final set of four adds two more navy pieces, plus the striped sweater and a print skirt:

Clockwise from top left: Serrv Jewel Stripe Cardigan; Fair Indigo Fair Trade Cotton/Alpaca Crew Neck Sweater in Midnight Navy; Fair Indigo Venetian Blue Jacquard Skirt (temporarily out of stock); L.L. Bean Women's Slim Perfect Fit Pants in Classic Navy.

And here is the complete 4x4 wardrobe:
