Signs of spring are everywhere right now here in Georgia! Our biggest forsythia bush has been in full flower for a couple of weeks now. The Bradford pear trees (Pyrus calleryana) out by the road have just started flowering:
Incidentally, although these small trees are very hardy, have beautiful fall foliage, and flower profusely, they are fly-pollinated, which means that those flowers smell like rotting carrion! I would not choose to plant these trees, but they were already here when we bought our property, and they are far enough away from the house so that we don't have to smell them!
Violets, another harbinger of spring, made their first appearance this week:
Our red camellia continues to flower,
as does the Chinese fringe flower (Loropetalum chinense):
We had a couple of days last week with highs near eighty degrees, but we've also had days this week with morning lows below freezing. Spring is definitely in the air, though, and I think our cold weather days are about over.
This weekend my husband and I will be in Santa Fe checking out potential future retirement neighborhoods. When I return I will devote most of the month of March to New Mexico posts, although I will probably throw in a few Georgia flower photos if something spectacular starts to bloom!
